Dyke structures are complex systems that serve to protect landscapes from unwanted inundation. How extensive the system needs to be and what measures are required in each individual case depends on the individual landscape conditions. Dykes can be constructed not only to protect coastal areas but also areas adjacent to rivers and natural flood plain zones.
